Remember Channelers and Mediums and Hex Maniacs? Yeah, Toby's ghosts like to possess him for Pokémon battles... and pretty often outside of them... and Toby is totally okay with that. Usually it's his first partner Pokémon, Lee -- meaning Toby rarely actually sends his Cofagrigus out -- but the others all get their turn on occasion, and he only ever fights with a team of five Pokémon at a time.
Fun facts:
- Can see even invisible/indistinct ghosts (think the Silph Scope in the first game).
- Kind of attracts ghosts more than most other people. Not like All Ghost Pokémon Will Converge On Her Location, but more like, if there's Ghost type Pokémon in the encounter pool of an area, Toby's significantly more likely to run into one, and repels don't work for her on Ghost types specifically. Ghosts in the area might also want to visit or seek her out for help, but they also might not.
- Fortunately, Toby loves Ghost Pokémon, is pleased that ghosts exist in general, and is kinda "hell yeah though" about the idea of potentially becoming a Pokémon after death. That's just kind of awesome.
- Also, they're just in general happy to get possessed? Whether it's fully letting one of their Pokémon drive for a battle, letting a wild Ghost type Pokémon (or even an actual, like, human ghost) speak to someone through them, or just kinda having one of their Pokémon in the passenger seat so to speak. Depending on the circumstances it's fun, or it feels like they're doing something helpful and good, or it just feels kinda cozy.
- OOCly, all of Toby's Pokémon are named after Hex Maniacs from Ruby/Omega Ruby, Sapphire/Alpha Sapphire, and Emerald: Leah in Mt. Pyre (Emerald), Valerie in Mt. Pyre (all five games), Patricia in the Trick House (Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald) and Mossdeep Gym (Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire), Alaina in Trainer Hill (Emerald), Tasha in Mt. Pyre (all five games), and Kindra on Route 123 (Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald) and in Mossdeep Gym (Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire).
